Valves (Types)

Valves are devices which are used to regulate liquids, gases and slurries. Valves do this by controlling the flow through pipes and other passageways by opening and closing and partially obstructing the passageway or pipe.

The majority of these mechanical valves are used on pipes and some of the major industries which use them are:

o    Oil industry

o    Gas industry

o    Mining industries

o    Water and sewage industries

The most noticeable type of valve is the hot and cold tap which is found in every household and many types of industries.

Many other types of valve are also found in the average household such as the valves which regulate the gas to a gas cooker, or valves which are used by washing machines to regulate the flow of water going to and from the machine.

Simple valves such as hand operated valves can be manually controlled by the use or turning of a handle or wheel. Other more complex valves are automated and work by external input. These types of valve usually require an actuator. The actuator works by stroking the valve depending on the set-up and input. This type of set-up allows the valve to be positioned and in turn allows control across a range of requirements.

The above fall into the category of basic valves, but there are many other types of valve which vary widely in their use and design.

Valves such as the Vacuum delay valve work by delaying a vacuum signal. these types of valve are commonly found in automobiles to change the behaviour of vacuum motors and vacuum switches and many other vacuum devices.

Proportioning valves work by the fluid pressure exerted on them to distribute the input forces to one or more output lines.

There are valves in the human body and heart valves are such an example. There are four valves in the heart and they maintain blood pressure by closing and opening depending on the pressure of each side.
